In 2004, the majestic cathedral celebrated its 100th anniversary. However, the history of its appearance goes back to the middle of the XIX century. It was then that the local authorities decided to build in the city a new brick Church of the Sign, an old wooden church named in honor of the righteous saints Zechariah and Elizabeth, to dismantle, and according to her plan to build the Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos. In 1860, construction work began. The Church of the Intercession was erected in a fairly short time. The solemn consecration of the church took place in August 1863 The temple was located in the poorest part of the city. Since it became impossible to maintain it with a modest donation, The Tomsk consistory decided to attribute the Intercession Church to the Cathedral of Peter and Paul. The territory of the Hare Sloboda rapidly increased, and by the beginning of the 80s. XIX Art. the church could no longer fit all the parishioners. As a result, local residents began to collect funds for the construction of a new, more spacious church. The amount required for the construction was collected only by 1898. In August of the same year, the first stone was laid in the foundation of the future church. The construction of the church was completed in 1903. In September 1904, the temple was consecrated. The first throne is the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos, the second is consecrated in honor of the Holy Blessed Prince Alexander Nevsky, the third is the Holy Great Martyr and Healer Panteleimon, and the fourth is in honor of the Holy Reverend Seraphim. The interior of the cathedral was painted on dry plaster with oil paints in 1918-1928. with the participation of the artist N. Shvarev. In April 1939, the church was closed, but not destroyed. Only the bell tower and the cross on the dome were demolished, and the building itself was used as a warehouse. Divine services in the church were resumed in January 1944. At that time it remained the only functioning church in the city, which was the reason for its transformation into a cathedral. In 1993, a bell tower was added to the church again.
