Photo & Description

One of the places worth visiting in Toledo is the Santa Cruz Museum of Art Monuments. The museum is located in a former hospital building. This building was erected from 1484 to 1514 by the architect Enrico de Egas, who received an order for the construction of a hospital from Cardinal Mendoza. In the construction of the hospital, created in the Spanish plateresque style, white marble was used together with a pinkish stone, which makes the building look light and elegant, and stands out from other buildings. In the plan, the building looks like a Greek cross and consists of two floors.

The main facade of the building attracts attention with a magnificent, luxuriously decorated main portal, made in the plateresque style. The portal is decorated with beautiful columns, stone figures and patterns. Inside the building, there is a grand staircase of three flights leading to the second floor. Made of light marble, decorated with elements of the Renaissance style, the staircase looks graceful and solemn. The main courtyard is surrounded by a beautiful two-story arched gallery. The famous architect of his era, Alonso de Covarrubias, took part in the construction of the building.

In the middle of the 20th century, restoration work was carried out in the hospital building. Since 1962, the Santa Cruus Museum has been located here. Archaeological artifacts, handicrafts and works of art are exhibited here. I would especially like to note the collection of paintings by the greatest artist El Greco, as well as the works of such outstanding masters as Francisco Goya, Ribera, Luca Giordano, Pedro Berruguete and others.
