Photo and description

The Roman Catholic Parish Church of Saints James and Martin is located in the popular ski resort of Rauris. This sacred building is decorated with a five-storey tower attached to the west. The only nave was redesigned in the Baroque style in 1774-1780.

The main treasure of the church is the central altar, dating from the second half of the 18th century. The huge altar, six meters long and 1.7 meters high, is made of silver. In 2016, it was sent to a workshop in Salzburg for restoration. 35 thousand euros were spent on the repair of this church item, 5 of which were allocated by the Department for the Preservation of Cultural Heritage.

This main altar was created in 1885 with funds donated by 16 wealthy citizens of Rauris. It was decided to make the altar of silver, mined by local miners. The construction cost, in terms of current money, 15 thousand euros. In 1962, the altar suddenly disappeared from the church. Only a few years ago, he was found in a depressing state in a warehouse. The altar was in need of immediate repair, which was carried out in 2016. The workshop staff took the piece apart, cleaned each element and put them back together again. The altar has now taken its place in the temple. In addition to him, in the Church of Saints James and Martin, you can see several side altars made in the late Baroque style.

The organ in the church dates from the late 19th century. When it was installed, one of the windows of the temple was closed with its body. Already in our time, at the end of the last century, the local priest, Father Joseph Strols, decided to reduce the instrument so that more natural light would enter the church.
