Photo and description

The village of Palehori is located in the capital district of Cyprus, just 40 kilometers from Nicosia itself in the Pitsilia region. The village is a fairly large settlement, the first written mention of which appeared 700 years ago. The name Palekhori itself, which translates as "old village", speaks of the rather large age of the village. It is surrounded on all sides by picturesque mountains and lush vegetation, and the Serrahi River, on the banks of which Palekhori is located, divides it into two practically equal parts. The main occupation of local residents is traditionally the cultivation of fruits and berries, olives, as well as winemaking.

The village itself is famous for its ancient customs and traditions, which its residents are quite zealous to observe and protect. The main attractions are two ancient churches that date back to the Byzantine era. One of them - "Metamorphosis" - a stone temple of the Transfiguration of the Lord, which is located almost in the center of Palekhori. It was built in the 17th century and is a fine example of traditional Byzantine architecture. Inside, the walls are covered with amazing frescoes dating back to 1612. At the beginning of this century, this church was included in the UNESCO cultural heritage list. Another famous place in the village is the 16th century church of Panagia Chrysopantanas, famous for its paintings.

In addition, the village has several museums, including a church one, where you can see ancient icons, vestments of priests and temple utensils, and museum dedicated to the national liberation struggle.
