Photo and description
The large village of Peristerona, which is located just over 30 kilometers west of the capital of Cyprus Nicosia, is one of the most popular resorts on the island. The village is located on the banks of the river, which is also called Peristerona, at the foot of the Troodos mountains, thanks to which there are very favorable conditions for growing fruits, olives and grapes. This is the main occupation of local residents.
Despite its relatively modest size, Peristeron has a huge number of architectural and historical monuments, most of which are religious buildings. What is noteworthy: both the mosque and the Orthodox Church there are literally a few meters from each other, which is a kind of symbol of tolerance and friendliness of the local population. But the main attraction of the village is still considered to be a large Orthodox church, which was built in the 10th century in honor of Saints Barnabas and Hilarion. It is located on the western bank of the river and is a striking example of Byzantine architecture. The main distinguishing feature of this church is its form, unconventional for the temples of Cyprus - it is built in the form of a cross, moreover, it has as many as five large domes. In addition, this church has several ancient icons depicting Jesus Christ, which were painted in the 16th century. Inside the walls of the temple are covered with elegant paintings and frescoes.
Peristerona, which is very popular among tourists, has a fairly well-developed infrastructure, there are many bars and restaurants,
