Photo and description

Kodak Fortress is an old Polish fortress, which is located near the city of Dnepropetrovsk, in the village of Stary Kaydaki. First of all, the Kodak Fortress is remarkable for its history. So, according to historical data, in 1634, in order to pacify the spirit of the Cossacks and prevent ordinary peasants from fleeing to them, the Polish king decided to build an impregnable fortress on the place of the Dnieper, where there was an outlet to the Black Sea.

The name of the village of Kodak in translation from the Turkic means "settlement on the mountain" and this explains the choice of the builders - from the fortress all the surroundings were clearly visible, while it was not so easy to approach it. It is noteworthy that a famous French engineer-fortifier was invited to build the fortress, who built more than one impregnable fortress in Europe - de Beauplan.

100 thousand Polish zlotys were allocated for the construction of the fortress - a huge amount at that time. But the fortress did not stay in Polish possession for long. Already a year after the construction, the troops of the Cossacks under the command of the ataman Sulima suddenly attacked the fortress, captured it and completely exterminated the garrison of 200 German dragoons.

In 1639, the fortress was reconstructed under the leadership of Frederick Hekant, as a result of which its size increased three times. On the territory of the fortress, a Catholic church and a monastery, an Orthodox church, and a watch tower were erected.

There were many glorious pages in the history of the fortress, but in 1940 it suffered a sad fate. A quarry was created on the site of the fortress, in which granite was mined. And in just a few years, 90% of the fortress was destroyed. Now you can admire its ruins and northern earthen ramparts, as well as the lake formed at the site of the quarry. However, it's still worth a visit.
