Photo and description

One of the symbols of Skopje is the old Stone Bridge, which connects the Old and New Towns. In fact, there are 9 bridges across the Vardar River in Skopje, but the Stone Bridge is located right in the historical center, a stone's throw from the main local attractions. In the New Town, right next to the bridge is a huge area of Macedonia. On the other bank, Old Charshia, as the bazaar is called here, is adjacent to the river.

There are two versions explaining the origin of the bridge. According to one of them, which, incidentally, is confirmed by archaeological research, the bridge was built in the 6th century, that is, during the reign of Emperor Justinian I, after the devastating earthquake of 518. According to the second version, which is also not unfounded, thanks to some historical documents, The stone bridge was erected during the reign of Sultan Mehmed II in the second half of the 15th century. Over the centuries, the bridge was damaged several times, which required repair. In 1555, an earthquake occurred in Skopje, as a result of which 4 stone pillars of the bridge were destroyed. After the restoration of this structure, the famous traveler Evlia elebi saw the bridge, who left notes about his trip. It says that on the bridge there was a marble plaque on which it was written: "When people saw the restored Stone Bridge, they said: It turned out better than it was before." In 1895-1897, the Vardar River overflowed its banks several times, flooding the embankments. The bridge also suffered from the high water. In 1944, the Stone Bridge was almost blown up by the actions of the Nazis. The last significant reconstruction of the bridge took place in 1992.

Pedestrian Stone Bridge is very popular with tourists, as it is a place where desires come true. To do this, you need to go to the middle of the bridge and, having made a wish, toss a coin into the water. However, the bridge helps only good people with pure thoughts.
