Photo and description

Mount Dombai-Ulgen is the highest, majestic and beautiful peak of the Western Caucasus. The height of the mountain is 4046 m above sea level. Mount Dombay is the highest point of the Dividing Range of the Greater Caucasus and is located east of the resort village of Dombay on the border of Abkhazia and the Karachay-Cherkess Republic at the head of the Teberda River. The mountain is the highest point of Abkhazia.

The top of the mountain is covered with glaciers and eternal snows, composed of granites, crystalline shales and gneisses. In the language of the indigenous people, the name of the mountain Dombai-Ulgen means “the place where the bison died”. The rocky and powerful Dombay-Ulgen massif consists of three gray peaks: the main (4045 m), eastern (3950 m) and western (4036 m), which draw a frozen silhouette of a large "bison", dying among the dense Caucasian forests and cold rocks.

The most picturesque view of Dombai-Ulgen opens from the famous Dombai glade, located at an altitude of 1650 m above sea level and formed at the junction of three gorges: Dombai-Alibek, Dombai-Yolgen and Amanauz.

Thousands of tourists and climbers come all year round to admire the picturesque landscapes among which this symbol of the Caucasus is located. Glaciers of slopes merging with the blue sky, bright green carpets of alpine meadows, turquoise lakes, stormy waterfalls, healing clean air and narzan springs that heal body and soul, attract with their pristine nature, bewitching anyone who has ever been here.

There are many tourist routes around the Dombai-Ulgen mountain. A steep ridge runs from the main peak to the north, which turns into a depression called "Dombayskoye saddle". The most common way up leads from here. Conquering the top is impossible without thorough preparation and a serious approach.
