Photo and description

The Island of Dead Dolls is a small island located in the south of Mexico City in the famous Xochimilco area. From afar, the island does not seem remarkable, but if you get closer, you will see that each of its trees is hung with unusual children's dolls.

The island is an eerie landmark in Mexico City, attracting horror lovers from all over the world. Here you can hear a variety of mystical stories and superstitions.

The history of the Island of the Dead Dolls originated in the middle of the last century. A hermit named Julian Santana Barrera lived on the island, he grew vegetables on the island, sold them and lived on the proceeds. Further, the legend says that one day he found a child's doll floating in the river. Later he found out that it was a toy of a girl drowned in the river. Since then, the reclusive recluse began to collect children's toys, mostly dolls, and make something like stuffed animals out of them, dressing up and hanging them on trees, hiding in the bushes.

In 2001, Santana died at the age of 80 years old. For 50 years, he practically filled the entire island with thousands of dolls. Nature also contributes to the exposition of this unusual museum. The plastic burns out and melts in the sun - the more frightening the dolls look, from the eye sockets of which local insects often peep.

To get to the island, you need to explain to the boatman that you need to go there, otherwise he may think that you are ordering the usual walk along Xochimilco. Visiting the island is not recommended for children and faint-hearted adults.
