The island of Hanizio is a small hill. At its very top, there is a 40-meter monument built here in honor of the fighter for the independence of Mexico and the country's national hero Jose Maria Morelos. He was killed by the Spaniards in 1815. There is a staircase inside the monument that leads to the raised fist of the statue. The observation deck offers a beautiful panorama of the lake and nearby islands. On the walls inside the monument there are paintings by the famous artist Ramon Canal.

Small ships are constantly sent from the town of Patzcuar to the island during the day. When you come to the island, you will immediately notice the fishermen who fish from the boats with nets resembling the shape of butterflies. Fishing has always been the main trade for many generations of islanders.

From the pier itself to the top of the hill, there are several small and narrow streets, on which there are a myriad of shops, which no tourist can pass by. They sell souvenirs, locally produced textiles and other interesting trinkets. It is worth noting that about a quarter of the population does not speak Spanish, they only communicate in the rare Indian language, Purepecha, which has about 120 thousand speakers.

The island of Hanizio is the most popular place among Mexicans, where at the beginning November is a colorful celebration of the Day of the Dead. These days, a carnival takes place, sweets in the shape of skulls are prepared and small figures of skeletons are made, clothed in women's outfits.
