The monument to Admiral Mikhail Petrovich Lazarev in Novorossiysk is the first monument that was erected to the founder of the city, the great naval commander and admiral. The grand opening of the monument took place in September 1996. The authors of this project were the chief architect A. Izmodenov and the sculptor A. Suvorov. The bust of the admiral was made at a local shipyard. The name of the Russian navigator, who made three round-the-world voyages, is closely associated with this city.

Mikhail Lazarev was born on November 3, 1788 in an old noble family. After completing five years of study at the Naval Cadet Corps, he went to serve in the British Navy. And already in 1813, the twenty-five-year-old lieutenant was appointed commander of the ship "Suvorov" cruising from Kronstadt to Russian America. During his first trip around the world, Lazarev discovered five uninhabited atolls, giving them the name - Suvorov Islands.

In 1819-1821. took part in the second round the world trip, which was led by F.F. Bellingshausen. Lazarev was given command of the Mirny sloop. In 1822-1825. Mikhail Petrovich was appointed commander-in-chief of the "Cruiser" frigate, on which he set off on his third voyage around the world.

In the period from 1827 to 1829. Lazarev took part in several sea battles at once. As the commander of the battleship "Azov", he showed himself well in the Navarino naval battle. For this he received awards and the title of Rear Admiral. Already in the rank of Admiral M.P. Lazarev commanded the Black Sea Fleet and ports from 1833 until his death. He was also the military governor of Sevastopol and Nikolaev. Lazarev played a huge role in strengthening the Caucasus and the Black Sea coast.

In the pre-revolutionary years, the name of M.P. Lazarev was named one of the main streets of the city of Novorossiysk and one of the peaks of the Markotsky ridge, which rises above the bay. In addition, in 1839, one of the Russian forts located near the city of Sochi was named after the great naval commander. Today it is the village of Lazarevsky.
