Faddey Faddeevich Bellingshausen (1778-1852) - admiral, Russian navigator. Little Thaddeus spent his childhood on the Baltic island of Ezel (Saaremaa), in the family estate of Pilguse. In 1789 he entered the Naval Cadet Corps in the city of Kronstadt. He graduated in 1797. The desire for science was noticed by the commander of the Kronstadt port, who recommended Bellingshausen to Ivan Kruzenshtern. Under his leadership, in 1803-1806 Bellingshausen made the first round the world voyage on the ship "Nadezhda". He completed almost all the maps that became "Atlas for the journey around the world of Captain Krusenstern."

In the summer of 1819, Captain II Rank Bellingshausen was appointed commander of the 3-yacht sailing sloop "Vostok" and the leader of the expedition to search for the VI continent, approved by Emperor Alexander I. The second sloop "Mirny" was led by a young military man Mikhail Lazarev. At the beginning of 1820 the ships of Bellingshausen and Lazarev near the Princess Martha Coast approached the unknown "ice continent". This is how Antarctica was discovered.

After returning from the Antarctic "round the world" F.F. Bellingshausen was the chief of the naval crew for 2 years, worked in staff positions for 3 years, in 1826 he led a flotilla in the Mediterranean Sea, took part in the siege and storm of Varna. In 1831-1838 he headed a naval division in the Baltic, from 1839 until the end of his life he was the military governor of the city of Kronstadt, and during the summer voyages every year he was the commander of the Baltic Fleet.

In 1843 F.F. Bellingshausen was promoted to admiral. He did a lot to improve and strengthen Kronstadt (this is how Yekaterininsky Square, Engineering Garden, the first alley of Petrovsky Park appeared, the Summer Garden was expanded, in which Peter's house was reconstructed, the North and Alexandrovsky Boulevards were being improved, etc.); took care of his subordinates like a father, seeking better nutrition for sailors; formed the marine library. Biographers F.F. Bellingshausen told about his benevolence and composure: he managed to maintain his presence of mind both under enemy fire and in the fight against the elements. He was married and had 4 daughters. He died in Kronstadt and was buried here, at the Lutheran cemetery. The sea in the Pacific Ocean, a glacier in Antarctica, an Antarctic station, an underwater basin, a cape on Sakhalin Island and 3 islands bear his name.

In September 1870, a monument to the brave navigator was opened in the Ekaterininsky (Soviet) park. The total height of the monument is 4.3 meters; pedestal - 2.2 meters, figure - 2.1 meters. The family coat of arms of F.F. Bellingshausen, made of bronze.

Barinov performed granite works. The monument was erected with money collected by subscription by colleagues and admirers of the great navigator.
