City art gallery description and photos - Bulgaria: Plovdiv. Detailed information about the attraction. Description, photos and a map showing the nearest significant objects. Photo and descriptionArt Gallery in Plovdiv - the second largest art gallery in Bulgaria, was opened in 1952. The reason for such popularity of the gallery is the active artistic life of the city. Initially, the exposition consisted of about 300 paintings collected from all museums of Plovdiv, private collections of citizens and administrative institutions. The unique collections of the art gallery are located in three different buildings, however, all three are located in close proximity: two on the territory of the Old Town, a recognized historical and architectural reserve, and another building is located near the central part of the city. The gallery includes a collection of icons, a permanent exhibition and exhibition halls with contemporary paintings. The permanent exhibition of the gallery has more than 200 paintings, which were selected, first of all, by the picturesque fund of Bulgaria. Each of the paintings defines specific historical moments and is directly related to the development of art in the Balkans. Among them are works by outstanding Bulgarian painters - Vladimir Dimitrov and Veselin Staikov. The collection of icons, which began to collect since 1975, provides gallery visitors with the opportunity to see rare icons dating from the 15th to the 19th centuries, found mainly in southern Bulgaria.
