Photo and description

Carcavelos is located on the Atlantic coast, 15 km from the capital of Portugal - Lisbon. It is the proximity to the capital and the ocean coast that makes this city attractive for those who like to relax and enjoy the endless expanses of the ocean. Surf lovers consider this city especially attractive. The city beach has everything you need for surfing, and the beach itself is famous for its special `` tubular '' waves (obstacle waves). Also, international surfing competitions are often held on the beach. The city gained wide popularity in the 18th century for the production of strong and sweet white wine. Today, wine production has dropped significantly. Due to its mild climate and hot springs, the city has become a favorite resort destination for the Portuguese, and for tourists.

Among the sights of the city, it is worth noting the parish church of Carcavelos. The walls of this temple are covered with multicolored tiles, traditional for Portugal - azulejos tiles. Above the sacristy door, a tiled panel depicts St. Francis receiving the stigmata. Attention is drawn to the vaulted ceiling, which depicts the scene of the adoration of the Magi and the Passion of Christ. Inside the church there is a niche used as a confessional; the wall above the niche is also decorated with blue and white tiles depicting the scene of St. Anthony's sermon to the fish. The authorship of these tile panels is attributed to Gabriel del Barco, a Spanish painter of the 17th century.

During his trip to Portugal, the famous Portuguese writer, Nobel Prize laureate in literature Jose Saramago, visited the church.
