Photo and description

The Parish Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is located in the city center and is considered one of the most famous churches in Cascais. The temple was built in the 16th century and will be of particular interest to art history lovers due to its interior design.

The design of the nave of the temple attracts special attention. The nave is decorated with paintings on sacred subjects, painted by the famous Portuguese painter of the 17th century, Joseph de Obidos. In the chapel of the temple there is a painting "The Assumption of the Virgin Mary" also painted by Joseph de Obidos. Decorating a temple with paintings painted by a woman is quite rare, especially when it comes to temples and other religious buildings. But it is worth noting that the works of Joseph de Obidos decorate many Portuguese monasteries and temples that are located in the central part of Portugal. One of the most prominent representatives of the Baroque movement in Portuguese art was born in Spain, but later her family moved to Portugal, where she lived all her life. The great artist and graphic artist was buried in the city of Obidos, in the temple of San Pedro (St. Peter).

The church has a fairly simple main facade. There are two bell towers on the roof of the church. Inside, the temple is spacious, the walls are decorated with the famous 18th century azulesos tiles, which were painted by hand. The luxurious carved wooden altars of the late 16th century, decorated with gilding, deserve special attention. The temple houses a painting of the Virgin Mary painted by the famous Portuguese artist Jose Malhoa in 1900.
