Wolvesey Castle was once the seat of the powerful and influential bishops of Winchester. In the Middle Ages, they played a significant role in the domestic and foreign policy of the country, and their vast holdings provided them with wealth. The castle was built by Henry of Blois, Bishop of Winchester between 1130 and 1140. And although we now call it a castle, in fact it was a magnificent palace that surpassed other royal palaces of that time. This is one of the largest medieval buildings in England. The palace could be accessed through separate gates in the city wall, which led to the courtyard, where the stables, various services and even the bishop's prison were located.

The castle has since served as the stage for many historical events. Queen Matilda fled here, after being defeated at the Battle of Winchester ("Winchester Getaway"). The wedding feast of Queen Mary and the Spanish king Philip II took place here.

The castle was destroyed during the Civil War in 1646, only the chapel survived from it. In the 1680s, a baroque building was built. One wing of this building, which has survived to this day, and to this day serves as the residence of the Winchester bishop and is in his private possession.

The picturesque ruins of the palace attract many tourists. The entrance is free, and there are signs on the territory with information about this historical monument. There is plenty of space for children to climb the ruins and play the game of kings and knights.
