Photo and description

In the historical part of the city of Ulyanovsk there is a park, founded in 1866 by the project of the local architect N.A. Lyubimov.

The history of the park began long before its foundation. In 1836, by order of Nicholas I, the central square was laid in the city of Simbirsk (now Ulyanovsk), and a little later a monument to N.M. Karamzin was erected. The project of the monument was worked by: architect A.A. Tone and sculptor S.I. Hilburg, and on August 23, 1845, the grand opening took place. Since then, the city square was called Karamzinskaya.

After a major fire in Simbirsk in 1864, most of the city's green zone was destroyed and the administration decided to create a square in the city center. A year later, Lyubimov develops a project for a protective grating and the order is carried out in the workshops of I.V. Golubkova. Thus, the cast-iron fence completed the creation of the outer appearance of the square in 1869, and landscaping and improvement began.

In 1882, Karamzinsky Square, thanks to the Americans traveling along the Volga, became famous throughout the world. While studying fruit growing in Russia, foreign guests came across a rare species of wild pear in the park, which they described in their book upon arrival to their homeland. After that, orders for cuttings from Karamzinsky square from gardeners from Western countries fell.

Now Karamzinsky square is a green zone (mainly consisting of Karamzin's favorite shrub - lilac) with asphalted paths and covered with red crumbs, which gives special coloring of shady alleys. Some of the plantings date back to the nineteenth century, for which in 1995 the park was declared a natural monument of the city of Ulyanovsk.
