Photo and description

The Imaret Mosque - a historical monument of the Ottoman period in Bulgaria, as well as a functioning Muslim prayer building - is located in the city of Plovdiv. It is the second largest mosque in the city (after the Jumaya Mosque) and one of fifty Muslim temples built in the city during the rule of the Turks.

The mosque was erected in 1444-1445. on the left bank of the Maritsa River (according to legend, on the site of an Orthodox church). Later, an unusual minaret with embossed brickwork was added to the building. The mosque was named after a nearby pilgrim's shelter (imaret means “shelter for the homeless”), which was destroyed in the 19th century. The temple was built in the traditional Islamic style - it is an octagonal domed building.
