Photo and description

Temple of St. Paraskeva - Orthodox church in Nessebar. The building has become an integral part of the old part of the city and the architectural ensemble, which is protected by UNESCO.

The construction of the church was completed, as scientists assume, by the XIII-XIV centuries. It was originally a basilica in the oldest part of Nessebar. This is a one-nave structure with a narthex characteristic of that time. The building measures 14.7 meters long and 6.6 meters wide. There is a vestibule and an altar apse. The structure of the church roof has not survived to this day, but it can be assumed that before the temple was domed. In addition, it is possible that there was also a bell tower that towered directly above the narthex. This is evidenced by the surviving elements of a stone staircase built directly into the walls separating the nave from the narthex. The facades of the building are made in a ceramic-plastic style.

A series of arches richly decorated with ornaments lasts along the southern and northern facades. The main motives are herringbone, sun, zigzag, chess. All of them are made of brick and stone, in alternating order. All stones used in the construction of the temple were smoothly hewn. Additional patterns are twisted over the arches.

The roof, as mentioned earlier, has not survived, therefore it was completed in later centuries.
