Photo and description

The Church of Saints Constantine and Helena is a Greek Orthodox church in the city of Volos. The temple is located on the picturesque city embankment and is one of the most famous sights of Volos. The church belongs to the Metropolitanate of Dimitriad and Almiros.

Long before the founding of modern Volos, on the site where the church stands today, a stone iconostasis was found dedicated to Saints Constantine and Helen. According to long-standing traditions, such an iconostasis could be considered convincing evidence of the existence of a Christian church here in ancient times, consecrated in honor of these saints and subsequently destroyed. And although no reliable data has been found to support this theory, it was here at the end of the 19th century that a small wooden church of Saints Constantine and Helena was built, the first service within the walls of which took place in April 1898.

Years passed and the old church was no longer able to accommodate all its parishioners. In the 20s of the 20th century, the mayor of the city, Mr. Spyros Spyridis, decided to build a new spacious temple on the site of an old wooden church. The project of the future church was developed by the architect Aristotle Zachos. Construction began in 1927 and only nine years later, in May 1936, the first solemn service was held in the presence of Metropolitan Dimitros Joachim.

The Church of Saints Constantine and Helena is an imposing stone structure with a huge bell tower with a clock. The interior of the church is famous for its many magnificent mosaics depicting scenes from the lives of the saints. The main church relics are particles of the Holy Cross and particles of the relics of Saints Constantine and Helen placed in a silver shrine.
