St. Konstantin and Elena description and photo - Bulgaria: Balchik. Detailed information about the attraction. Description, photos and a map showing the nearest significant objects. Photo and descriptionThe Church of Saints Constantine and Helena is an Orthodox Greek temple located in the town of Balchik. The building was built in 1894. It is known that in those years there were only two churches in Balchik: the Bulgarian one, named after St. Nicholas, and the Greek one, called the "Epiphany". The Church of Saints Constantine and Helena is a two-storey, three-aisled basilica with a traditional element of the Bulgarian temple architecture - an apse. The roof of the temple is not crowned with a dome. Its main advantage is the exterior decoration - a large number of elegant stone details that adorn the open bell tower located on the roof. As a result of government policy in 1906, many Greeks left the territory of Bulgaria. This is probably the reason that in the Church of Saints Constantine and Helena they stopped holding services. During the years of the Romanian occupation and after, the temple was used for other purposes. Until recently, the building functioned as a concert hall. Only closer to our days, the church was finally put in order and re-consecrated. Today it is a functioning temple.
