Mount Oyberg (Hooiberg) description and photo - Aruba. Detailed information about the attraction. Description, photographs and a map showing the nearest significant objects. The name in English is Hooiberg. Photo and descriptionOyberg is a mountain, 165 m high, of volcanic origin, located on the island of Aruba. It is located almost in the very center of the island and is visible from almost anywhere. The Dutch word "oiberg" literally translates as "haystack", and indeed, a lonely peak in the middle of a flat landscape evokes associations with a bale of hay. In 1951, Eduardo Tromp built a staircase to Oyberg, consisting of 900 steps. Due to the danger of using the old structure, in 1990, after 35 years of operation, the government decided to renew the steps, which by that time were almost completely erased due to erosion and old age. The renovation project was completed in 1991, but during the construction phase it was decided to change the original design. The new steps are wider and longer there were 587 of them. Halfway up the stairs, a gazebo was built for a rest stop, from which you can enjoy the beautiful landscape. Even Venezuela is visible from the top on a clear day. The image of Mount Oyberg is on the state emblem of Aruba, it symbolizes the country rising from the sea. An interesting fact is that the composition of the rock is quartz diorite, which is not found anywhere else in the world, it was named oibergite. The vegetation on the slopes is cactus and divi-divi trees, on which bright yellow flowers bloom after the rainy season.
