Photo and description

The Jacek Tower is a historic tower that was part of the medieval fortifications of the Polish city of Gdansk. The tower was built in the northwest corner of the city walls in 1400. The construction of the tower was associated with the need to protect the Old City from enemy invasions.

The building is a 36-meter octagonal tower with a brick dome. Due to its height, it served as an observation post and allowed to see the attack from the side of the Old City, which at that time did not yet have its own fortifications. The tower had eight floors and very thick solid walls (up to three meters). The vaulted cellar under the tower was used as food storage for the city's defenders. The high roof of the pavilion was built only in 1556, when the Jacek tower was no longer a defensive object. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the tower was used as a warehouse.

During the Second World War, the Jacek Tower was severely damaged. Repair work was carried out for quite a long time - until 1955. Photo exhibitions have been held in the tower's interiors since 1962.
