Photo and description

Shirokaya Street leads to the Na Podmuzhu tower, the name of which translates as "In the Wall" tower. A powerful structure of dark brick, almost devoid of windows, is part of the fortress walls and, as it were, is embedded in them.

One of the oldest towers in the city of Gdansk was built in the 14th century and served as a defensive bastion. Guards could hide behind its walls in case of an enemy attack. In the vicinity of this fortification, the tower of St. Yatsk, built in 1400, and the tower of Brama Sheroka (the tower of the Wide Gate) also survived. Therefore, an inquisitive tourist, walking along the fortress wall, can imagine a medieval city hiding behind it.

In 1945, during the devastating battles for Gdansk, the Na Podmuzhu tower, like many historical buildings, was destroyed. It was stripped of a roof and some fragments of walls. For a long time nobody was interested in the ruins of the tower. Only in 1988 this object was transferred to the jurisdiction of the Historical Museum of the city of Gdansk, which undertook its reconstruction. The tower was rebuilt according to old drawings and opened to the public in 1997. It houses a branch of the History Museum, which in 2000 became an independent institution and was renamed the Gdansk Museum of Sports and Tourism. Unfortunately, the exhibition dedicated to the tourism and sports achievements of the local residents was closed in 2008. Now the Na Podmuzhu tower belongs to the Department of Monument Protection, which operates at the Historical Museum of the city of Gdansk.
