Powder Tower (Krudttaarnet) description and photos - Denmark: Frederikshavn. Detailed information about the attraction. Description, photographs and a map showing the nearest significant objects. The name in English is Krudttaarnet. Photo and descriptionThe Powder Tower is located in the very center of Frederikshavn, a few steps from the main station and in front of the port area. This is the only surviving part of the old defensive fort, still known under the former name of Fludstrand. The tower was built in 1686-1690 at the same time as the fortress, from which nothing remains now. It is a relatively low but very powerful building with thick walls made of white stone. The tower is crowned with a cone-shaped brown-red roof. On the last tier, separating the building itself from the roof, a gallery with artillery pieces was previously equipped, and small windows - loopholes were cut into the walls. The Fludstrand fortress served as an important defensive fort, guarding the east coast of Jutland and a large port, where there was anchorage of ships, including the military. This fort has played an important role in various wars and conflicts, including the Northern War of 1700-1721 and the Anglo-Danish War of 1807-1814. The tower itself functioned not only as part of the defensive fortifications - it also housed a depot of ammunition, including gunpowder - hence its name. However, later the fortress was destroyed, and the tower itself was moved to another place. This happened already in the middle of the 20th century - in 1974. Previously, the tower was located at the extreme tip of the cape, washed by sea waves - this location was explained by the fact that enemy ships could not come close to the city, as they immediately found themselves under attack from the side of the cannons located in the powder tower. However, due to the increase in the size of Frederikshavn harbor, it was decided to move this historical monument further from the sea, deep into the city itself. In 1976, the powder tower was opened for tourists, the royal family was present at the opening ceremony. The tower is now part of the Bangsbo City Museum. Inside, the history of the now defunct Fortress Fludstrand is presented, as well as an exhibition of ancient weapons. The Powder Tower is the symbol of the city of Frederikshavn and is depicted on the city's coat of arms.
