Maritime Museum description and photos - Bulgaria: Kavarna. Detailed information about the attraction. Description, photos and a map showing the nearest significant objects. Photo and descriptionThe Dobrudzha and the Sea Maritime Museum in Kavarna is part of the nearby Historical Museum. Kavarna is a Bulgarian town located on the Black Sea coast with a rich history. Once the region, on one side adjacent to the Black Sea and on the territory of which Kavarna is now located, was called Dobrudja. Due to its advantageous strategic position, it often became the subject of a dispute between two neighboring states - Bulgaria and Romania. In order to preserve historical evidence - objects that tell about the life and culture of Dobrudja, the Maritime Museum was founded in Kavarna. The exposition is housed in a restored Turkish bath building - a hamam, which was built in the 16th century. It is a massive stone structure with one large and three small domes. The exhibition reflects the maritime history of the area. Here you can see stone anchors, amphorae, pottery and a lot of rare evidence of ancient navigation along the Dobrudja coast. Most of the items were discovered as a result of underwater archaeological expeditions. Colored maps from the period of antiquity and the Middle Ages give an idea of navigation on the northern coast of the Black Sea. The Treasury Hall displays coins from different eras and golden Thracian treasures. An ingot of two metals - copper and gold - discovered at Cape Kaliakra is a unique exhibit. Scientists suggest that this is an ancient medium of trade exchange around the XIV century BC, which existed even before the advent of coins.
