Photo & Description

Union Terrace Gardens is a public park and garden located on Union Terrace Street, the main thoroughfare of the Scottish city of Aberdeen. It is an outstanding monument of gardening art, a favorite place of recreation for citizens and tourists.

The park was opened to the public in 1879 and covers an area of about two and a half acres. The park is located in a small river valley, in the north it is bounded by the Rosemount Viaduct, in the south - by Union Street. The eastern border is Union Terrace Street, home to a monument to Scottish poet Robert Burns. The gardens are surrounded by magnificent examples of Aberdeen's urban architecture - the Theater Royal, St. Mark's Church and the library.

The coat of arms of the city is laid out in flowers in the northern part of the park. At the end of Union Street, there are elms that are over 200 years old. They were planted to strengthen the riverbank and stop the soil from slipping. Many crows nest in the elms.

The city council is currently considering plans to redevelop the gardens. According to these plans, the appearance of the city center will radically change, becoming "a kind of combination of Italian piazza and mini-Central Park." The opinions of the townspeople were divided approximately equally - in support of reconstruction and against it.
