Photo and description

The picturesque lake Kourna is the only freshwater lake in Crete and one of the main natural attractions of the island. The lake is located 47 km east of the city of Chania and 4 km from the resort village of Georgioupolis. In ancient times, the lake was called Koresia, since the temple of Athena Koresia was located nearby. The lake got its current name from the Arabic word "kurna", which means "lake".

On the one hand, the lake is surrounded by a picturesque green valley, and on the other - majestic white mountains, which are reflected on a clear sunny day in calm and clear water, thus creating an impressive picture. From a bird's eye view, Lake Kurna seems to be colorful. The bordering white stripe (sand color) is very clearly visible, which abruptly turns into a turquoise strip (this color is created by algae growing in shallow water). The center of the lake has a deep blue color due to the depth.

Qurna is a relatively small lake. Its circumference is approximately 3.5 km, length - 1087 meters, and width - 800 meters. Many local myths and legends are associated with Kurna, one of which says that the lake is bottomless. Modern studies have shown that the depth of the lake is about 23 meters. The lake is an important part of the Greek ecosystem and is protected by Natura 2000. Ducks, eels, water snakes and rare bicolor turtles live here. Also on the lake you can sometimes see cormorants and herons.

Lake Kurna is very popular among both locals and tourists. Here you can walk around the neighborhood, sunbathe on the beach and swim in the crystal clear waters, rent a catamaran or boat and explore all the surroundings of the lake. There are many cozy taverns and cafes around the beach where you can relax and enjoy traditional local cuisine, as well as admire the beautiful panoramic views.
