Photo and description

The memorial complex "Mound of Glory" was erected in 1966-1969 in memory of the Great Victory in the Great Patriotic War.

It was decided to build the Mound of Glory on the site of the famous "Minsk Cauldron", where the operation "Bagration" was successfully carried out, during which the 105th group of German troops was surrounded. More than 35 thousand German military officers and soldiers were taken prisoner.

It was decided to fill the Mound of Glory according to the old Slavic tradition - the whole world on a handful of earth. Land was sent here from all over the USSR, people came, brought their native land in memory of those who performed a military feat here and laid down their heads together with the enemy soldiers. Together, a 35-meter high earthen mound was poured. 241 steps of a long staircase lead to the top of the mound.

The creation of the complex was supervised by the people's artist sculptor Andrey Onufrievich Bembel. The sculptor A. Artimovich, architects O. Stakhovich and L. Mitskevich, engineer B. Laptsevich also participated in the creation of the memorial.

The mound is crowned with a memorial of four bayonets, 35.6 meters high. Four bayonets are a symbol of the four Soviet fronts that surrounded the fascist group. The bayonets are united by a common ring with bas-reliefs of Soviet soldiers and partisans. On the inner side of the ring there is a mosaic on which the inscription is made: "Glory to the Soviet Army, the Liberator Army!"

The Mound of Glory is located near the main airport of the country and everyone who arrives in Minsk by plane sees this monumental structure, thanks to which the Mound of Glory has become a kind of symbol of Belarus.
