At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, due to the sharp increase in the flow of mail, a decision was made in Saratov to build a new spacious building for the main post office. The site for the construction was chosen at the intersection of the central streets of Moskovskaya and Ilinskaya (now Chapaeva St.), having bought it from the attorney Boychevsky. The project was prepared by the St. Petersburg architects M.V. Kobelev and P.P. Kolpakov, who were at that time in the service in the Main Directorate of Posts and Telegraphs. The ceremonial laying of the building in the presence of a large crowd of people, clergy and officials took place on July 19, 1914. Architects M.G. Zatsepin and A.N. Klementyev were in charge of the construction.

In 1916, on December 29, a new complex of the city post office was opened, equipped with the latest technology. For that time, the event was grandiose. All newspapers wrote about the new, technologically equipped building, and later photographs of the external facade of the Saratov post office began to be printed on mail envelopes. The functional building was constructed and finished with an extremely solid and high quality, and has been in continuous use for its intended purpose for about a hundred years.
