Photo and descriptionThe Odessa fortress is one of the oldest fortifications in the city. The fortress is located on Marazlievskaya street, 1, Shevchenko park. Almost two centuries ago, on the site of the current park. Shevchenko, the Turkish fortress Khadzhibey towered, but after its capture by Russian troops, it was dismantled into a building stone. And already in 1795, under the leadership of Joseph de Ribas, the Odessa fortress was erected. The initiator of the construction of this defense facility was Alexander Suvorov. In Odessa, it existed for only twenty years, because after the next Russian-Turkish war, the border moved further to the south-west, as a result, the fortress was abolished as unnecessary. In 1811, after the fortress was liquidated, its entire territory was transferred to Quarantine. Now the Odessa fortress is in ruins. Only the arcade of the Quarantine Wall with a powder tower and the Andreevsky Bastion, on which the Alexander Column was installed in 1891, have survived from the structure. The preserved part of this fortification houses the Museum of Memorable Dates of the History of the City. Funds are periodically allocated from the budget in order to slightly repair the fortress, but the complete reconstruction of the fortification is not yet envisaged. Today, this is the territory of the central park of culture and recreation named after Taras Shevchenko. From the arcade of the Odessa fortress, a beautiful picturesque view of the seaport opens. Many say that many ghosts can be found in and around the fortress, after all, these otherworldly creatures are very fond of this kind of old buildings. People even allegedly met the spirit of Sonya herself - the Golden Hand, who was sent from these places to life hard labor.
