In the city of Syktyvkar of the Komi Republic, on Kommunisticheskaya street, 2, there is the Derbenevs Trading House, which is part of the National Museum of the Komi Republic.

The period of the late 19th - early 20th centuries in the city of Ust-Sysolsk was marked by the active construction of buildings specially designed for trade. The construction of such houses was an initiative of nonresident merchants who came to the city, who found it extremely unprofitable to rent retail premises in state or private houses. For example, at the beginning of Kommunisticheskaya Street, which at one time was called Trekhsvyatitelskaya, somewhat adjacent to the market square, brick buildings began to be built, intended for the shops of merchants from the city of Veliky Ustyug named Derbenevs.

The famous Trading House of the Derbenev family was built at the end of the 19th century and became the most spacious and largest of all existing stores in the city of Ust-Sysolsk. The building was a symmetrical one-story room with a mezzanine in the central part, which previously housed an office. The house consisted of three large trading halls, which housed a variety of manufactory, haberdashery goods, icons, furniture and much more. Trained shop assistants were involved in trade. According to the preserved papers of that time, the trade turnover of the first department store in the city before the beginning of the revolution was quite an impressive sum of money.

The central part of the Trading House is two-story; it was built in the period from 1899 to 1900 and was intended for the needs of the sale of manufactory and haberdashery products of a merchant belonging to the Second Guild, Okhlopkov Fedor Ivanovich.

A few years later, namely in 1906, the store was bought by Ustyug merchants: Grigory, Mikhail and Ivan Derbenevs. During 1906-1907, one-story and somewhat elongated along Trekhsvyatitelskaya Street, the so-called "wings", were attached to both sides of the house, which made it possible to increase the premises of trading halls to a greater extent.

In 1918, the Trading House was nationalized, and in the middle of the same year on the ground floor of the building there was a club called "Star". The club existed here until the winter of 1919 and had at its disposal two spacious halls that housed a cinema, as well as a reading room and library. The Ust-Sysolsk RCP City Committee is located on the second floor. In the period from 1918 to 1919, the Zvezda clubhouse was a Bolshevik state dedicated to the control of works related to various kinds of meetings, rallies, concerts and lectures.

During 1922-1935, in the building of the Trading House Derbenevs was a city printing house. In 1935, a department store was located here. In 1970, a new department store was built in Syktyvkar under the same name "Syktyvkar", after which a furniture store appeared in the building of the previously existing department store, which was located here until the 1990s. During the period from 1997 to 1998, the building has undergone some changes associated with large-scale restoration work. After that, it was given to a branch of the National Museum of the Komi Republic, namely, under the exposition of the ethnographic department.

The last of the expositions of the Ethnography Department of the National Museum was formed in 2002. It was based on a fabulous plot, which was developed on the basis of available folklore materials, according to which the material and cultural culture of the entire people is based on the relationship between a Woman and a Man - its main creators. The exhibitors of this exhibition were: Pyankova T.A., Lipin V.B., Smirnova O.N., artists Burdaev N.P., Samoilov A.V., Dmitriev S., Pavlyuk O .. It was these talented people who decided to move away from the traditional story about the culture of the people through the inherent material side, and showed the presented exposition from the point of view of the rituals of the life cycle, defining the human path from birth to death.

Today, the building of the Trading House of merchants Derbenevs looks different than in the old days, but still pleases residents and guests of the city with its unusual architecture, which stands out clearly against the background of the entire street ...
