Photo and description

Herrenhauser Gardens were laid out under Countess Sophie von der Pfalz, daughter of Elizabeth Stuart and mother of King George I. The gardens consist of the Great Garden, Berggarten, Georg and Welf gardens. The large garden is one of the most significant Baroque gardens in Europe and has a layout patterned after the 17th-18th century Dutch parks. The Berggarten has evolved from a vegetable garden to a botanical garden with fountains, sculptures and grottoes. The gardens of Georg and Welf, laid out in the English style, are reputed to be a favorite place for walks and recreation within the city.

Only one wing of the Herrenhauser Palace, destroyed during the Second World War, survived - the art gallery. Its central baroque hall is decorated with frescoes by Tommaso Giusti. During the summer festivals " Music and drama at Herrenhauser '' music concerts are held here.
