Photo and description

Chieti is one of the most interesting towns located in the vicinity of Pescara on the banks of the river of the same name. It was founded in the era of Ancient Rome, but it had its greatest importance in the Middle Ages. That is why Chieti has preserved a huge number of historical and architectural monuments built at that time and still attracting tourists. City attractions include medieval churches, statues and other works of art.

Those interested in the architecture of the Middle Ages should definitely visit the Gothic Cathedral of Chieti, with its beautiful marble altar, stately furnishings, numerous priceless paintings and frescoes and an impressive bell tower. It was built in the 11th century, slightly modified in the 14th and significantly rebuilt in the 17-18th centuries after several earthquakes. Another interesting city church is San Francesco al Corso, which contains paintings by Ettore Graziani and Giovanni Battista Spinelli, as well as an amazingly beautiful stained glass window from the 12th century. Among other religious buildings in Chieti, the churches of Sacro Monte dei Morty and Santa Chiara should be noted. And under the building of the Church of San Pietro e Paolo and the adjacent houses are the ruins of buildings from the 1st century BC.

The National Archaeological Museum of Abruzzo "Villa Frigeri", also located in Chieti and boasting a collection of pre-Roman artifacts, is worth a visit. In addition to it, there are a number of museums in the city, including the Biomedical Science Museum, The Costantino Barbella Art Museum and the La Civitella Archaeological Museum.
