Photo and description

Lanciano is one of the oldest towns in the vicinity of Pescara. Recently, during archaeological excavations on its territory, traces of a settlement were found, which is about 7 thousand years old! These findings, of course, are of great historical and archaeological value, but still most of the settlement remains unexcavated. Monuments dating back to the era of Ancient Rome and the Middle Ages are much more accessible to tourists - they are no less interesting and exciting.

As in most other Italian towns, Lanciano has many beautiful churches that attract not only believers, but also tourists - among them it is worth highlighting the churches of Santa Maria Maggiore, Sant Agostino, San Nicola, San Francesco. Santa Maria Maggiore is generally one of the most important churches in all of Abruzzo, as it contains priceless works of art. And the ancient building itself, built in the 13th century, is of considerable interest.

The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Ponte, named so because it was built on the bridge, is the creation of the architect Micitelli. It houses an 8th-century Byzantine Madonna statue. And in the church of San Francesco, which also has a second name, the Church of the Eucharistic Miracle (Chiesa del miracolo eucaristico), a miraculous event took place that turned Lanciano into a place of pilgrimage. In the 8th century in this very church, during the sacrament of the Eucharist, one of the priests doubted that bread and wine would turn into the Body and Blood of Christ. However, at the very moment when he broke the Eucharistic bread, he realized that something else was in his hands - a thin slice of human flesh. A thick red liquid splashed in the bowl, which had nothing to do with wine. Since then, the Church of San Francesco has kept the Blood and Flesh, miraculously revealed to the world. The blood is in an antique rock crystal bowl and has retained its properties for 12 centuries! Interestingly, as a result of scientific experiments carried out at the end of the 20th century, it was found that this blood belongs to the same group as the blood found on the famous Turin Shroud.

Those who are more attracted to medieval buildings will like a walk through the old center of Lanciano with its defensive fortifications and powerful walls. The 15th century Torrey Montanare towers are worth noting, which offer a wonderful view of the city.
