The Regional Historical Museum occupies an important place in the cultural life of the city of Gabrovo. It was created on the initiative of the director of the Aprilovskaya gymnasium, the future minister of public education, Raicho Korolev in 1883. The collection of antiquities collected in the gymnasium served as the basis for the museum's exposition.

Over the more than a century history of the Historical Museum, its funds have expanded significantly, now they include exhibits of the Paleolithic era, antiquity (IV-VI centuries BC. .), the period of the existence of the First and Second Bulgarian kingdoms, as well as Turkish rule, the Renaissance, the industrial upsurge and our days.

Currently, the museum complex is located in the former building of the Bulgarian National Bank. A beautiful massive multi-storey building was built in 1904 by the architect Nikolai Lazarov. For the needs of the museum, the building was reconstructed.

The collection of the complex has more than 90 thousand exhibits, including: found objects of the life of primitive people, a numismatic collection (including the first Bulgarian banknote 20 lev), the second most important collection of traditional and urban clothing and accessories, a rich collection of furniture, busts of two honored industrialists of Gabrovo - Ivan Kolchev Kalpazanov and Pencho Semov, a collection of materials about industrialization and much more.
