Photo and description

The Church of St. George is located in a picturesque place on the banks of the Yantra River, at the foot of Mount Trapezitsa in the Asenova Mahala quarter in the Bulgarian town of Veliko Tarnovo. It is a stone structure 10 meters long and 5 meters wide, with a narrow vestibule and a semi-cylindrical vault. Above the entrance to the main part of the church, an ancient inscription in Greek has been preserved: “The pious Paraskeva and Irina during the time of Metropolitan Gabriel of Veliko Tarnovo repaired and reconstructed the Church of the Great Martyr George in 7120 (1612) from the creation of the world. The works started on March 15 and finished on May 20 ”.

The temple was built on the foundations of a medieval basilica, which probably existed at the time when Veliko Tarnovo was the capital of the state. In 1685, the narthex was re-painted in the church and the iconostasis was renewed.

The frescoes in the church belong to the work of several artists. In the center of the altar is the image of the Mother of God, below is the appearance of the Holy Spirit to the apostles, and below it is the Eucharist (communion). In the altar part there are also images of St. Cyril of Alexandria, St. Archdeacon Stephen, St. John of Damascus, St. Basil the Great, etc. In the niche is a scene from the Scriptures "Christ in the grave." On the northern and southern walls of the temple, you can see the faces of the saints: Demetrius, George, Theodore Tiron and others. The western side is dedicated to women who were elevated to the rank of saints, among whom, of course, Paraskeva. There is also a multi-figured composition "The Assumption of the Virgin" and three episodes from the cycle "Holy Week": "The Last Supper", "Climbing with the Cross" and "Climbing the Cross".

In the narthex of the church, two layers of wall paintings from different times were discovered. From the very first one survived the "Creation of the World" and the figures of the prophet Elijah and the Old Testament righteous man Enoch. But the greatest impression on visitors in this part of the building is made by the artistic composition "The Last Judgment" on the eastern wall and "The Marriage at Cana of Galilee" on the western wall.

In the period 1968-1971. According to the project of the Bulgarian architect Boyan Kuzupov, restoration work was carried out in the temple.

The Church of St. George was declared a monument of history and architecture of national importance.
