The Tsarevets Fortress is today considered the hallmark of the city of Veliko Tarnovo. The fortress is located on a hill with a magnificent view of the city.
Today, most of the fortress is a reconstruction, since this ancient monument was almost destroyed by an earthquake that occurred in the early 20th century.
Earlier the fortress was the place where the local aristocracy lived. Here were the royal palace, the residence of the patriarchs and several cathedrals, of which only the Patriarchal Cathedral has been restored in our time.
The greatness of the fortress in our time is reminiscent only of the preserved sculpture of a lion, located at the entrance to the fortress.
The Tsarevets Fortress was built on impregnable stone cliffs. At that time, the height of the walls reached 12 meters, and the thickness – 3 meters. Previously, criminals were thrown from these walls into the Yantra River as punishment.
In the evening, the fortress is illuminated by many searchlights. During the summer, it often hosts a flower music show.
