The Sakhalin Art Museum in the city of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk is one of the youngest museums in Russia and the only art museum in the Sakhalin Region. It is located in a building made in the Art Nouveau architectural style. The museum building, built in 1930, is faced with relief masonry and decorated with the Doric order and concrete stucco. The author of this project was a Japanese architect.
Previously, this building housed the Japanese bank "Hokkaido Takushoku", after - the Sakhalin branch of the State Bank of the USSR. However, in the 1980s. the building was reconstructed and transferred to the disposal of the museum. Today the museum building is a historical and cultural monument of the Sakhalin Region.
The Sakhalin Art Museum was founded in August 1983. In February 1987, the first temporary exhibition from the museum's funds was opened in the building of the House of Officers of the Soviet Army in the city of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. In March 1989, a permanent exhibition was opened in the current building.
At the moment, the museum contains more than 11 thousand items of exhibits. The museum collection consists of eight sections. Visitors can see part of the museum collection by visiting temporary exhibitions in the large hall and the museum hall on the ground floor. As for the permanent exhibitions, they are located on the second floor.
In the hall of Christian art, amazing works of copper casting, icon painting of the 17th-21st centuries, copies of ancient Russian frescoes, works of A. Krylov are exhibited. Russian art XIX - early XX cent. represented by the academic landscape of the second half of the XIX century. V. Beringer, N. Dubovsky, Y. Klever, A. Meshchersky, A. Egornov, P. Bryullov, L. Lagorio, L. Turzhansky, R. Falk, V. Meshkov and so on. The main asset of the collection is the painting "Magdalene against the background of rocks", which was found in one of the private collections. In addition to paintings, the exhibition features chamber sculptures and bas-reliefs. The museum also displays a unique collection of works of art from the countries of the Far East.
Every year new exhibitions are opened in the halls of the Sakhalin Art Museum.
