Photo and description
The best start for exploring Sakhalin is the Sakhalin Regional Museum of Local Lore. The building of the museum was built in 1937 in the traditional Japanese style "teikan zukuri" (imperial crown) for the museum of the Karafuto governorship during the Japanese occupation of the island. After the end of the Second World War and the liberation of South Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands, the museum was nationalized by the Soviet Union and opened as the Regional Museum of Local Lore.
The Museum is the keeper of the history of Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands. The expositions of the museum are represented by rare collections of cultural objects of Sakhalin aborigines: Nivkhs, Ainu, Uilta (Oroks), paleontological collections, original documents, photographs and objects reflecting the complex history of the region in the XIX-XX centuries. Departments represented: zoological, ethnographic, mountain, agricultural, prison-technical. About 70 thousand tourists visit the museum annually. The museum provides the following services: lectures, thematic, sightseeing and field excursions.
