Photo and description

The Trinity Cathedral is the oldest church in the city of Odessa, the Odessa Diocese of the Moscow Patriarchate, and is located at 55 Ekaterininskaya Street (corner of Trinity).

The Church in the name of the Most Holy Trinity was founded in 1795 by Metropolitan Gabriel of Yekaterinoslav for the city's Greek community. From the very beginning, the building was made of wood, and already at the end of July 1804, according to the project of the architect F. Frapolli, the laying of the stone church was solemnly held by Archbishop Athanasius. After 4 years of construction, in 1808 the temple was consecrated by Archbishop Plato. After 3 years a Sunday school was opened at the monastery. After the uprising in Greece, Patriarch Gregory V of Constantinople was executed in 1821, and his relics were buried in the Trinity Church and remained there until 1851

The first rector of the church was Archpriest John Rhodes. In 1838, under his leadership, two side chapels in the Byzantine style were added to the church, which were consecrated in 1840. In 1900-1908, under the leadership of the architect A. Todorov, the monastery was partially rebuilt.

From 1936 to 1941 Trinity Church was closed by the theomachous authorities, but after the Great Patriotic War the church was restored and reopened. The southern side-altar was rededicated in honor of the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos, and the northern one in honor of the icon of the Mother of God. On December 28, 1956, the Trinity Church was designated the temple of the Alexandrian courtyard in Russia. Divine services in the temple were performed in Greek and Church Slavonic. The courtyard of the church existed in Odessa until April 1999 and was moved to Moscow, and the Trinity Church was returned to the status of the city church of the Odessa diocese. At the beginning of 2006, with the blessing of the Odessa Metropolitan Agafangel, the cathedral was returned to its catholic dignity.

Today in the Trinity Cathedral there is the revered image of the Mother of God `` Unexpected Joy '', and in the evening of every Friday an akathist to the Most Holy Theotokos is performed in front of it. There is also a Sunday school for adults and children and a parish library in the cathedral.
