Photo and description

The Church of the Ascension of the Lord is located in the city of Murom, on Moskovskaya Street, 15. It was erected in 1729. Funds for its construction were donated by burgomaster V. Smolyaninov, commissioner O.I. Named and former clerk A. Gerasimov.

For the first time a temple at this place was mentioned in 1573-1574. At that time, the church was wooden, it was burned and rebuilt more than once. And the Murom ethnographer N.G. Dobrynkin found out from the diocesan list that the Ascension Convent was once located here, but no other documents mention this.

The temple had two side-chapels: Voznesensky and Entry-Jerusalem, built not much later in the side-chapel, added immediately after the construction of the main church volume. The stone building was not heated therefore, services were held here only in summer, and for winter services a "warm" wooden church in honor of the Icon of Our Lady of Vladimir was erected nearby.

The tent bell tower is the same age as the temple. In the 40th year of the 19th century, it had ten bells, including a huge bell, weighing about 3200 kilograms, cast in 1830 at the expense of the honorary citizens of the city, Murom Andrian and Petr Myazdrikov.

The church was very beautiful, with five golden domes, a spacious refectory and an annex, in which an altar in the name of Sergius of Radonezh was consecrated. It is noteworthy that the Ascension Church was the first in Murom to be illuminated with electricity.

In 1922, the church was closed and ravaged, a large number of valuables were seized from it, and, 7 years later, the chapter was destroyed. A school of the first stage was set up in the building.

The Church of the Ascension stood on Voznesenskaya Square, on the site of which a city square is now laid out, and only the name of the temple reminds of the square. Previously, there was a carriage exchange, and a police booth was installed near the temple - one of four in Murom.

The history of the revival of the temple began in 1999, when the abbot of the Transfiguration Monastery conducted the consecration ceremony of one of its chapels. After that, divine services began here.

Currently, the Ascension Church has 2 aisles attached to the facade of the main building. From the south there is a chapel in honor of the Lord's Entry into Jerusalem, dating back to the 18th century, and from the north - a chapel in the name of St. Sergius of Radonezh, consecrated in 1892.

The architecture of the Church of the Ascension of the Lord has been preserved in its original form. It belongs to the temples of the Yaroslavl type: there are 5 chapters, an extensive refectory and a high tent-roofed bell tower. In terms of decor, the temple is distinguished by its modesty, but, despite this, it stands out among other city buildings for its harmony and graceful proportions. The facade of the temple is decorated with windows with terem frames, a 3-step curb cornice and columns with exquisite capitals at the corners.

The interior of the temple is decorated with several old icons. Their silver frames are inlaid with precious stones. The icons of the Mother of God "Assumption" and "Life-Giving Spring" are decorated with silver crosses, which contain particles of imperishable relics.

The Church archive has historical documents, including a blessed certificate for the construction of a temple (1729) and a certificate for the consecration of the Vladimir wooden church, issued in 1771 by the Vladimir bishop Jerome.
