The famous University of Mumbai, or as MU students themselves affectionately call it, is a public educational institution located in Mumbai, in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Until 1996, it was accordingly called the University of Bombay.

This university is considered one of the earliest institutions of higher education in the country. It was founded back in 1857 by Dr. John Wilson, in the likeness of educational institutions in Britain. Today the university complex consists of several buildings: the Kalina campus, located in the suburbs of Mumbai; Fort campus; the Ratnagiri campus and several others. But the main one is the Fort campus, where the entire administration of the educational institution is located, moreover, it is an amazingly beautiful architectural structure. The campus is named so thanks to the area in which it is located - it is a busy business center of the city, on the territory of which a defensive fort was located in the past. The building was built in the Gothic style and attracts with its special solemn and gloomy atmosphere. It is replete with arches, columns, narrow windows and stained glass windows. One of the main attractions of this building is the clock tower called Rajabai, or as it is also called Mumbai's Big Ben. It was designed by British architect Sir George Gilbert Scott. Its construction was completed in the 1870s. It was named after a woman named Rajabai, mother of a businessman Premchand Raichand, who sponsored the construction. The tower is over 85 meters high and houses the university library.

After India gained independence, the University of Mumbai ceased to be just an educational institution. At the moment, it has turned into a research center that deals with the study and solution of various social problems, as well as sociology and politics.
