Photo and description

The Orlov bridge is one of the most significant and liveliest in the capital of Bulgaria, Sofia. It got its name from the bronze statues of eagles on the bridge, symbolizing patronage and protection. Located next to the Vasil Levski National Stadium, not far from the Central Park and the monument to the Soviet Army. Orlov Bridge was built 2 years after the construction of the Lviv Bridge, in 1891. Architects Adolf Vaclav Kolar and Vaclav Proshek worked on his project. The metal parts of the bridge were designed and supplied by the renowned Viennese company Rudolf Philip Wagner & Biro, whose exquisite products can also be seen on the decorations of the Vasil Levski monument and the fence of the Central Park.

The Orlov Bridge is significant not only as a crossroads of Sofia's traffic flows, but also has an important social purpose. After the democratic transformations of 1989, the Orlov Bridge became a favorite place for all kinds of protests, such as the millionth rally of the Union of Democratic Forces on June 7, 1990, the environmental protection event of environmentalists in 2012 “Capture the Orlov Bridge”, protests against poverty and price increases in 2013 .
