In 1942, the Transport Union of Switzerland was founded, located in Zurich. However, there was no suitable territory for the construction of a museum building, and it was decided to establish a museum in Lucerne. Construction work began in 1957. Construction was supported by union finances as well as by the city and canton of Lucerne. On July 1, 1959, the Swiss Transport Museum opened and quickly became popular. The exposition of the museum is divided into several thematic sections: passenger and freight transport, aviation and astronautics, cable and cable cars. Here you can see the stages of construction of the famous Gotthard Tunnel. There are simulators and flight simulators on various aircraft. A separate pavilion houses a huge panoramic model of Switzerland, which you can walk along with your own feet, having previously put on special slippers. The extensive collection of rail vehicles even includes Swiss rail vehicles from as early as 1875, as well as historical documentaries on the subject. The collection of urban transport includes cars, horse carts, bicycles, motorcycles. The so-called "autotheatre" is an original entertainment for the museum visitors. Everyone is given the opportunity to take part in some semblance of a show with a large selection of cars from different historical eras.
