Photo and description

Botanical garden named after A. Fomina is located in the historical district of Kiev not far from the Universitet metro station and is one of the oldest botanical gardens in Ukraine.

The garden was created in 1839 at the Kiev University, which was then named after St. Vladimir. Here, on the 22.5 hectare vacant lot adjacent to the facade, a garden was laid out. The collection of the garden was based on the plants of the Kremenets Lyceum, which was closed for promoting the restoration of Poland's independence. Already in the second half of the 40s of the 19th century, a complex of greenhouses appeared in the garden, which greatly increased its attractiveness for the people of Kiev. It was here that the famous artist Vrubel was looking for clues for creating ornaments in the Vladimir Cathedral he was painting, and the poet Lesya Ukrainka loved to rest here. Not surprising, that the Botanical Garden found its reflection in the works of such writers as Maxim Rylsky, Vladimir Sosyura and others.

At the same time, the Botanical Garden is not only a resting place, but also a real scientific institution. There are more than ten thousand plants in it, carefully collected all over the world, and most of this exotic exotic for Ukraine grows in open ground. The same plants for which the local climate is contraindicated feel great in greenhouses for subtropical and tropical plants, agaves and cactus plants. There are even unique greenhouses specially built for aquatic and coastal plants, and in a huge climatron (a greenhouse with a height of 30 meters), the oldest palm trees not only in Ukraine, but also throughout the entire former USSR, continue to be preserved. For this reason, the Botanical Garden has always attracted and still attracts many botanists, among whom was Alexander Fomin, whose name it now bears.
