Photo and description

Cabot Tower is located in Bristol, UK. It is located in a park on Brandon Hill, near the city center.

The tower was built in honor of the famous sailor John Cabot, to commemorate the 400th anniversary of his expedition. A native of Italy, the navigator Giovanni Caboto moved to England in 1494, where his name was changed into English. In 1497, on the ship "Matvey" John Cabot reached the shores of the country that is now called Canada.

Construction of the tower began in 1897 and finished in 1898. There is a spiral staircase inside the tower, and there are two observation decks on the tower, from which an excellent view of the city opens. The upper platform is located at a height of 102 meters above sea level, while the height of the tower itself is 32 meters.

The tower is built of red sandstone and trimmed with cream-colored limestone, the architectural style is neo-Gothic.

On the other side of the ocean, in the city of St. John's (Newfoodland and Labrador, Canada) there is another Cabot Tower, also built to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Cabot's discovery of the coast of Canada.
