The tower was built and named after the famous seafarer John Cabot. The construction was timed to coincide with the 400th anniversary of his main expedition: in 1497, a traveler from Italy was the first to reach the shores of today's Canada. Started in 1897, construction was completed by 1898. The neo-Gothic tower is built of red sandstone, finished with cream-colored limestone. Inside the Cabot Tower, there is a spiral staircase leading to two observation decks offering a beautiful and picturesque view of the city. The tower is 32 meters high and the upper observation deck is 102 meters above sea level.
It is noteworthy that on the other side of the ocean, in the Canadian city of St. George, there is a tower of the same name, also built in honor of John Cabot, the discoverer of Canadian lands.
