Katergo beach description and photos - Greece: Folegandros Island. Detailed information about the attraction. Description, photographs and a map showing the nearest significant objects. The name in English is Katergo beach. Photo & DescriptionKatergo Beach on Folegandros Island is famous for its crystal-emerald waters and remote location. It is located at the southeastern end of the island, in an uninhabited area, next to the small islet of Pelagia. In the past, local people mined here iron ore (red iron ore), from which they made dye for boats and houses. The whole process was very laborious, the conditions were difficult and unhealthy, which is why the locals called the area “katergo” (hard labor or “kitchen”). Today it is a long beach with fine white pebbles and clear turquoise by the sea. Although not easily accessible, it attracts many visitors. A large rock, located just a few meters from the coast, attracts fans of diving from the cliffs. The beach is secluded, there are no merchants, sun loungers and shade on it, take water, food and umbrellas with you, because the nearest village with shops is 30 minutes walk. Excursion boats from Karavostassi float to the beach.
