The State Museum of the Defense of Moscow is located on Michurinsky Prospekt, in the Olympic Village. The museum was founded in 1979. The exposition of the museum was based on the exhibits of the exhibition dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the Moscow battle.

The halls of the museum were opened to visitors in 1981. The exposition of the museum in chronological order displays a great event in the history of Russia - the Moscow battle of 1941-1942. This event predetermined the fate of not only Russia, but the whole world.

In 1994, the museum was reconstructed. In 1995 a new exposition was opened. The opening was timed to coincide with a memorable date - the 50th anniversary of the Victory. With the help of almost four thousand exhibits, a grandiose, unique architectural and artistic solution of the museum's exposition was created, reflecting the picture of the defense of the capital.

The exposition allows the visitor to fully realize what stopped the best forces of the army, considered the most powerful in the world at that time, on the approaches to Moscow. The exposition of the museum reflects the whole drama of the history of the war: 1941 - the people's militia, the air defense of the capital, which managed to save Moscow from intense enemy raids.

The collection of the State Museum of Moscow Defense contains materials about the defense and defenders of Moscow, the battle under Moscow, memoirs, diaries, letters, photographs, maps belonging to the participants in those events and their relatives. The exposition has a section dedicated to the memoirs of veterans. The museum contains lists of participants and veterans of the Moscow battle. Wartime newspapers are presented and carefully preserved in the museum, acquired by the museum from collectors.

The exposition of the museum consists of seven rooms. In four halls there are thematic exhibitions: "The beginning of the war." "Invasion". "Military enlistment office". "Childhood interrupted by the war." "Volunteers are militias." "Construction of defensive structures". "Products of Moscow enterprises for the front". In the following halls, there are exhibits telling about the combat path of divisions that passed with heavy battles from Moscow to Berlin. The sixth hall of the museum is dedicated to "People's memory". The seventh hall of the museum is completely dedicated to Marshal G.K. Zhukov. It also presents memoirs and works of writers about the Moscow battle.
